X-Rays used to be the main way to take images of the mouth. Black and white, two dimensional scans that show the layout of bones and any abscesses or other irregularities. Today, the X-Ray has been superseded by the CBCT scan, or Cone Beam Computer Tomography. It’s a new type of Computer Assisted Tomography (CAT scan) that creates three dimensional images. It has revolutionised the world of medical imaging, producing much clearer and more detailed images than X-Rays ever could.

This precise imaging makes dental processes much easier and quicker. It’s easier for dentists to identify misaligned teeth, wisdom teeth, locations of potential implants, fractures and breaks, and even tiny root canals. It lets dentists diagnose potential problems at a much earlier stage, lengthening the life of teeth and gums and leading to much better overall oral health.

The procedure is very straightforward and totally hassle-free. You’ll be seated in the CT machine, which is open, unlike the claustrophobic MRA machines. The machine will revolve around your head taking scans, each one taking only a minute or so. It’s important to keep still while the scan is taken. The number of scans you require depends on why you are having them done in the first place, but the whole procedure shouldn’t take longer than half an hour.

CT scans are totally safe. They give a low dose of radiation that is much less than a traditional medical CT scan. A CT scan of the whole jaw requires a radiation dose equivalent of about 2 weeks of background radiation so there will be no impact on your overall health. However it is important to inform the dentist or radiographer if you think you could be pregnant.

You can’t refer yourself to have a CT scan – it will be part of your treatment as determined by the dentist or consultant in charge. There’s no need to be concerned or worried. This pain-free, non-intrusive scan will give the dentist crystal clear images to improve and speed up your treatment, so whether it’s required for cosmetic or functional dentistry you can get back out there and dazzle the world with your new smile as soon as possible.
